Spray Tan frequently asked questions

Spray Tan frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • Q. Why is a specially formulated sunless exfoliating scrub (like California Tan Exfoliator) better for my sunless tan in comparison to my regular exfoliating scrub?

    A. When exfoliating the skin prior to a sunless application, it is important to not only remove dry flaky skin that can cause uneven results, but also to remove any residue from soaps and moisturizers that can leave a film on the skin and/or oils that create a barrier to the sunless ingredients. It is important to use an oil-free scrub that will leave the skin fresh and primed for optimal sunless application and not add additional oil to the skin. California Tan Exfoliator and California Tan Exfoliator Towelettes are specially formulated for use with self tanners and are oil-free products.

  • Q. How does Barrier Cream work?

    A. Barrier Cream provides a protective barrier layer to prevent the penetration of DHA into the upper layers of the skin, thus preventing staining. Certain areas of the body, like the palms of the hands, bottom of the feet, cuticles, and nails are more porous and stain easily. Therefore, these areas should be covered with an even layer of barrier cream to prevent unwanted discoloration.

  • Q. Will the spray tan from a spray tanning application come off on my clothes?

    A. Yes. After your treatment but before your shower both the cosmetic bronzers and DHA can rub/sweat off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning, or perspire in a warm environment. To minimize the chance of the tint transferring to clothing, we recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session. The colour is water-soluble and easily washes out of cotton and most fabrics. As an extra precaution, avoid wool, nylon or silk which can be difficult to wash fabrics.

  • Q. Will a sunless spray tan affect the color of my nails or nail polish?

    A. The solution will not discolor nail polish. However, the solution can cause unnatural coloration of cuticles and nails. Therefore, we recommend you apply California Tan Barrier Cream to nails and cuticles prior to a sunless spray application to avoid any discoloration. For extra care, try a clear polish to maintain nail appearance as colour transfer sometimes happens when wearing closed shoes in a warm environment due to foot perspiration.

  • Q. Will a sunless spray tan discolor my hair?

    A. DHA reacts with proteins. As hair is a protein, it can discolor some hair types if it penetrates the hair follicles. Those with treated or light hair, such as blonde, white, or grey hair should take extra precautions. It is recommended you wear a protective hair cap, provided by most salons, to ensure protection from discoloration, but make sure the forehead, ears, and hairline are exposed. Those with light hair (blonde, grey, or white) or men with facial hair can also apply a thin layer of barrier cream into the hair on to the temples, hairline and moustaches/beards to avoid discoloration.

  • Q. Is it safe for pregnant women to spraytan?

    A. There are no known risks associated with DHA or other common sunless tanning ingredients with pregnancy. However, any medical advice is beyond the scope of this website, and we hope any pregnant women consult their physician for the most current information available.
