Indoor tanning is made possible by special lamps which emit UV light. First introduced in Germany in 1906 for the medical purpose of treating rickets and other ailments benefitng from UV exposure, it was not until the 1970s that tanning in a commercial setting for cosmetic purpose came into existence.
Control over UV emission permits regulated exposure which can greatly reduce the possibility of immediate injury from over-exposure causing sunburn. However, excessive long-term repeated exposure still presents the same cancer related health risks as outdoor tanning.
Likewise, the same positive health benefits associated with vitamin D3 production from outdoor exposure is also beneficial with indoor exposure.
